Since the late 1980s, three iterations of this land cover inventories have been realised (timed around 1990, 20).The 4th inventory recently commenced, as part of the GIO land (GMES Initial Operations Land) project.Regarding the Arc GIS software versions 9.3 and higher should work properly with the European CLC2012 data.EEA does not support any more downloading CLC data shapefile format in 100x100 km tiles.The Corine databases and several of its programmes have been taken over by the EEA.One of these is an inventory of land cover in 44 classes, and presented as a cartographic product, at a scale of 0 000.Topographic maps were scanned, and raster form was transformed to vector data with Geo Media Professional 6.1 and Global Mapper software.
The obtained results clearly showed changes in forestation within the 43-year-long period, as well as changes in primary erosion and urbanization, while at the level of agricultural land, slight changes were found.
Analogous topographic maps done in 1969, 1974, and 1984 were used, while in 2012 the land cover map obtained by using CORINE-like approach was used.
Topographic maps are developed by aerial campaign, and today they are replaced by satellite images.
The characterization of the fuels is an important issue of the fire regime in each specific ecosystem while, on the other hand, fire is an important disturbance for global vegetation dynamics.: Corine Land Cover maps for 20 (CLC2000, CLC2006) and burned area (BA) perimeters, from 2000 to 2013 in Europe are combined to access the spatial and temporal evolution of the types of vegetation that are most affected by wild fires using descriptive statistics and Geographical Information System (GIS) techniques.: The spatial and temporal distribution of BA perimeters, vegetation and burnt vegetation by wild fires was performed and different statistics were obtained for Mediterranean and entire Europe, confirming the usefulness of the proposed land cover system.
